I need to be straight with you about the 2026 FBA fee changes. Amazon announced an average $0.08 increase per unit. After reviewing fee reports for hundreds of our clients at AMZ Prep, I’m seeing something very different.

Most sellers are paying 8-10% more, not 0.5%.
Here’s what actually happened: Amazon didn’t just increase one fee. They increased fulfillment fees in January, then added a 3.5% fuel surcharge in April, raised AWD West storage by 19%, bumped transportation costs by 22%, and restructured placement fees for mid-weight products.
When these hit together, the math changes fast. For a full picture of what sellers actually take home after all amazon seller fees, the income breakdown by business model shows the real numbers.
What You’ll Actually Pay for a $25 Product (6 oz)
Let me show you the real numbers:
- Referral fee (15%): $3.75
- Fulfillment fee: $3.29
- Fuel surcharge (3.5%): $0.12
- Storage (monthly): $0.17
- Total FBA fees: $7.33
- Your take: $17.67 (before product cost, prep, and ads)
That’s 33% in fees, up from 31% in 2025. Use our Amazon FBA calculator to see your exact costs.
This blog will walk you through every 2026 fee change with real examples from our fulfillment operations. I’ll show you which fees increased the most, who gets hit hardest based on product type and price point, and exactly where you can cut costs.
You’ll also get complete fee tables verified against Amazon’s official rate cards, so you can calculate your actual expenses, and not just Amazon’s averages. By the end, you’ll know your real cost increase and what to do about it.
Three Changes That Matter Most in 2026
1. Fuel Surcharge (Started April 17, 2026)
Amazon added 3.5% to all FBA fulfillment fees in US and Canada. This stacks on top of the January increases.
Real impact: A product with $5 fulfillment now costs $5.18. That’s $0.18 per unit, or $1,800 per month if you sell 10,000 units.
The surcharge applies to:
- FBA fulfillment in US and Canada
- Remote Fulfillment with FBA to Canada, Mexico, Brazil
- Multi-Channel Fulfillment (starting May 2, 2026)
- Buy with Prime (starting May 2, 2026)
Amazon calls this temporary. Industry observers note that similar surcharges from other carriers became permanent.
2. Amazon Ended FBA Prep Services (January 1, 2026)
Amazon no longer preps or labels inventory at US fulfillment centers. Every unit must arrive fully prepped and compliant.
The penalty for mistakes: Amazon merged its old inbound charges into one inbound defect fee. It averages $0.60 per unit for shipments that arrive late, get misrouted, or never arrive. Units that show up without required prep or labels also face unplanned prep fees, which vary by size.
Break-even point: If you ship 150 units per month, professional prep services now cost less than the risk of defect fees.
Your three options:
- Handle prep yourself (time-intensive and mistakes are now exponentially more expensive)
- Have your supplier do it (quality varies wildly, especially with overseas manufacturers)
- Use a third-party USA FBA prep services provider (costs money upfront but includes quality control that prevents expensive defect fees)
The 2026 inbound defect fee:
- Amazon merged separate placement and defect charges into one fee.
- It averages $0.60 per unit for late, misrouted, or missing shipments.
Real-world impact: A 2% error rate on 10,000 units is about 200 units. At $0.60 each, that is roughly $120 in defect fees, plus any unplanned prep fees for units that arrive non-compliant.

3. Aged Inventory Adds Steeper Tiers for the Oldest Stock
The Aged Inventory Surcharge starts at 181 days. That threshold has applied since 2024, so it is not new for 2026. What changed for 2026 is the top of the structure. Amazon raised the rate for 12 to 15 month stock and added a new tier at 15 months and beyond.
- 181 to 270 days: First aged inventory surcharge applies
- 12 to 15 months: Fee increases to $0.30 per unit or $6.90 per cubic foot, whichever is greater
- 15+ months: Fees jump to $0.35 per unit or $7.90 per cubic foot
Action required: Review any inventory approaching 150 days. Either liquidate it or remove it before surcharges hit.
What Changed When Amazon FBA Fees Increased Again in 2026
Amazon’s official announcement claims fees have risen an average of $0.08 per unit as of January 15, 2026. But your actual cost increase depends entirely on what you sell and at what price point.
Some products see no increase. Others jump by $0.51 per unit. Here’s the complete breakdown:
| Size Tier | Shipping Weight | Under $10 | $10-$50 | Over $50 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small standard | Up to 2 oz | $2.43 | $3.32 | $3.58 |
| Small standard | 2+ to 4 oz | $2.49 | $3.42 | $3.68 |
| Small standard | 4+ to 6 oz | $2.56 | $3.45 | $3.71 |
| Small standard | 6+ to 8 oz | $2.66 | $3.54 | $3.80 |
| Small standard | 8+ to 10 oz | $2.77 | $3.68 | $3.94 |
| Small standard | 10+ to 12 oz | $2.82 | $3.78 | $4.04 |
| Small standard | 12+ to 14 oz | $2.92 | $3.91 | $4.17 |
| Small standard | 14+ to 16 oz | $2.95 | $3.96 | $4.22 |
Sellers with higher-priced products get hit hardest. If you’re selling items in the $40-$60 range, that $0.51 increase might seem small per unit. But multiply it across a year of sales and the numbers get serious fast.
How Amazon’s Combined Fee Changes Increase Your Total Costs
Most sellers focus on the per-unit fee increase. That’s a mistake. The real impact comes from multiple changes affecting simultaneously:
- AWD West Region storage: +18.8%
- Transportation costs: +21.7%
- New weight classifications pushing products into higher tiers
- Increased minimal shipment split penalties
For a typical seller moving 1,000 units monthly of 6-pound products, the combined monthly increase is around $700 ($8,400 annually) – not just the base fulfillment fee change.
The ‘send everything to one location’ strategy is now the most expensive option. Amazon is penalizing convenience and rewarding multi-location distribution.
Quick example: You sell 400 units monthly at the higher fee tier. That’s $204 per month or $2,448 per year in additional fulfillment costs alone.
Additional 2026 Fee Changes You Need to Know
Low-Price FBA Rates and Fee Discount Programs
Good news: The Low-Price FBA discount increased from $0.77 to $0.86 for items priced under $10.
Amazon now calculates low inventory level fees at the FNSKU level instead of parent ASIN level. To go to Low-Price FBA eligibility requirements, check if your products qualify for the FBA New Selection program.
The low-price FBA rates offer better economics for sellers of budget-friendly items, with the fee discount helping offset other increases.
New Overmax Handling Surcharge for Extra-Large Products
If you sell in the Extra-Large size tier, watch for the new Overmax Handling Fee effective January 15, 2026. Any Extra-Large product (up to 150 lb) that exceeds 96 inches on its longest side, or 130 inches in combined length plus girth, is now classified as Overmax and incurs an additional surcharge of $17 to $25 per unit on top of standard FBA fulfillment fees.
This is not a replacement for the base fee it stacks on top. A product that cost $33.55 to fulfill in 2025 would cost $50.55 in 2026 once the $17 Overmax surcharge applies. If you sell large furniture, exercise equipment, or industrial items, measure your packaging dimensions carefully against these thresholds.
Peak Fulfillment Fee Increases
Amazon’s 2026-2027 holiday peak fulfillment fees apply from October 15, 2026, through January 14, 2027.
The seasonal per-unit increase over non-peak rates remains unchanged from last year, averaging $0.32 per unit in the U.S. The 3.5% fuel and logistics-related surcharge applies on top of holiday peak fulfillment fees.
Inbound Placement Service Fee Changes
Starting January 15, 2026, inbound placement fees are being completely restructured with new weight bands and the Large Bulky category splitting into two tiers.
Standard-Size Fee Changes
| Size | Weight | 2025 Fee | 2026 Fee | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small Standard | ≤16 oz | $0.16–$0.30 | $0.14–$0.32 | Minimal |
| Large Standard | ≤1.5 lb | $0.18–$0.41 | $0.20–$0.50 | +$0.02–$0.09 |
| Large Standard | 1.5–3 lb | $0.27–$0.49 | $0.34–$0.60 | +$0.07–$0.11 |
| Large Standard | 3–20 lb | $0.37–$0.68 | $0.38–$1.50 | +up to 120% |
Products in the 3-20 lb range see the biggest increases.
New Bulky Categories
| Category | 2025 Fee | 2026 Fee | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small Bulky (≤50 lb) | $1.10–$5.95 | $1.10–$5.95 | No change |
| Large Bulky (≤50 lb) | $1.10–$5.95 | $1.30–$6.50 | +5–10% |
Example: 6 lb Product
| Units | 2025 Cost | 2026 Cost | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | $37 | $42 | +$5 |
| 1,000 | $370 | $420 | +$50 |
| 10,000 | $3,700 | $4,200 | +$500 |
Placement Options
| Strategy | Locations | Fee | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimal Splits | 1 | Highest | Small sellers |
| Optimized Splits | 5+ | None | High-volume sellers |
| Partial Splits | 2-3 | Reduced | Medium sellers |
Multi-Channel Fulfillment Fees Increasing
If you use FBA to fulfill orders from your Shopify store, Walmart, or other platforms through Amazon Business or standard channels, you’ll pay $0.30 more per unit. That’s a 10-15% increase on non-Amazon orders.
Payment Timing Delayed
Amazon is moving to DD+7, which means you get paid 7 days after delivery instead of after shipment. For most sellers, that’s an extra 7-10 days before money hits your account.
AWD Storage and Transportation Costs Rising
Storage fees in Amazon Warehousing and Distribution West region have increased 19%, and transportation costs have jumped 22%. These rates are currently in effect.
2026 AWD Regional Fee Changes
AWD Fee Breakdown: 2025 vs 2026
| Fee Type | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage (West Region) | $0.48 | $0.57 | +18.8% |
| Storage (Other Regions) | $0.48 | $0.48 | No change |
| Transportation | $1.15 | $1.40 | +21.7% |
| Inbound Processing | $1.35 | $1.40 | +3.7% |
| Outbound Processing | $1.35 | $1.40 | +3.7% |
What this means: Amazon is raising storage costs on the West Coast, making it much more expensive to store inventory there. At the same time, storage in the East and Midwest remains more affordable. The 21.7% increase in transportation costs shows that carrier contract costs are putting pressure on shipping expenses.
Action Items:
- Audit inventory currently in AWD West
- Calculate if 3PL is cheaper for West Coast storage
- Move slow-moving SKUs out of AWD West immediately
- Consider hybrid strategy: AWD East/Midwest + 3PL West
Understanding Amazon FBA Fees and Why They Evolve
Your FBA fees cover storage, picking, packing, shipping, and customer service. Beyond that, you get access to Prime customers and delivery speeds few businesses can replicate independently.
Why Amazon FBA Fees Change Every Year
Amazon adjusts FBA fees annually to account for:
- Rising operational costs including labor, fuel, and facility expenses
- Service improvements like faster delivery, better placement, and enhanced systems
- Market conditions to stay competitive with other fulfillment providers while maintaining service quality
- Seller behavior optimization by encouraging better inventory management, compliant packaging, and efficient shipping
The 2026 increases average $0.08 per unit, significantly lower than the 3.9% to 5.9% annual increases from major carriers like UPS and FedEx during the same period.
Despite fee increases, FBA still offers benefits most sellers cannot replicate independently: Prime eligibility drives 25% to 40% higher conversion rates, Amazon handles customer service and returns, and the fulfillment network reaches 90% of the US population with two-day delivery.
Understanding Amazon’s Fee Structure
Amazon charges fees in three main categories: per-sale fees, storage fees, and conditional fees.
Per-Sale Fees (charged on every order)
- Referral fee: 8% to 45% depending on category. Most categories charge 15%.
- Fulfillment fee: Varies by size, weight, and price band. The $2.43 small-standard figure is the sub-$10 Low-Price rate. In the $10 to $50 band it is higher. Large standard ranges up to about $6.97 plus charges for heavier items.
- Fuel surcharge: 3.5% of the fulfillment fee, effective April 17, 2026.
These fees apply to every unit sold through FBA.
Storage Fees (charged monthly)
- Standard-size: $0.78 per cubic foot January through September, $2.40 October through December
- Oversize: $0.56 per cubic foot January through September, $1.40 October through December
Peak season storage (October through December) costs 3x more than off-peak months.
Conditional Fees (only apply in specific situations)
- Aged inventory surcharge: For inventory stored 181+ days
- Low inventory level fee: When stock falls below 28 days of supply
- Inbound placement fee: When Amazon distributes inventory for you instead of you shipping to multiple locations
- Returns processing fee: For returns in categories with high return rates
- Inbound defect fee: For shipments that don’t meet prep and labeling requirements
Types of Amazon FBA Fees as per 2026
You need to understand these different fee types to calculate your profits accurately:
Fulfillment Fees
These are your core charges for every unit Amazon picks, packs, and ships for you. What you pay depends on your product’s size tier (envelope, standard, or oversized) and its shipping weight.
Storage Fees
You’ll pay monthly charges based on how much space your inventory takes up in Amazon’s fulfillment centers. For 2026, you’re looking at $0.78 per cubic foot per month for standard-size products from January through September, then $2.40 per cubic foot during Q4 peak season (October through December). Oversize products are charged at $0.56 per cubic foot (Jan–Sep) and $1.40 per cubic foot (Oct–Dec).
Long-term Storage and Aged Inventory Surcharges
Amazon has replaced their old long-term storage fee with a more detailed Aged Inventory Surcharge structure that hits your wallet sooner. Your fees start kicking in at 181 days now, and they increase the longer your items sit unsold.
For 2026, Amazon restructured the aged inventory surcharge thresholds. The key change: a new 15-month tier was added, and surcharges now kick in at the 12-month mark (previously the structure started earlier at different rates). Here is the current structure:
| Storage Age | Surcharge Rate (US) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 181 to 270 days | Varies by cubic ft — unchanged from 2025 | Existing tier — no change |
| 271 to 365 days | Existing rates apply | Existing tier — no change |
| 12 to 15 months (365–455 days) | $0.30 per unit or $6.90 per cu ft, whichever is greater | Rate increased by $0.15 vs 2025 |
| 15+ months (455+ days) | $0.35 per unit or $7.90 per cu ft, whichever is greater | NEW tier added in 2026 |
The practical takeaway: if you have inventory approaching 12 months in FBA, pull the Aged Inventory Surcharge report in Seller Central and liquidate or remove anything unlikely to sell in the next 90 days. The new 15+ month tier makes holding dead stock significantly more expensive than in previous years.
Returns Processing Fees
When customers return your products, you’ll face additional charges, especially in categories known for high return rates.
Unplanned Service Fees
If your shipments don’t meet Amazon’s preparation, labeling, or packaging requirements, you’ll get hit with penalty fees. Ensure compliance by following our comprehensive Amazon FBA packaging requirements guidelines to avoid these costly penalties.
Low Inventory Level Fees
You’ll face Amazon’s Low Inventory Level Fee when your historical days of supply at the seller-FNSKU level falls below 28 days. From 2026, this fee also applies to Small Bulky and Large Bulky products, while Grocery items and slower-moving products remain exempt.
Inbound Placement Service Fees
When you choose not to split shipments yourself, you’ll pay charges for Amazon to distribute your inventory to fulfillment centers close to customers.
These inbound placement fees make middle mile logistics for Amazon sellers more critical than ever. By optimizing how you transport inventory from your warehouse or 3PL to Amazon’s network, you can significantly reduce or eliminate placement fees. Strategic middle mile solutions such as shipping to prep centers with direct routes to multiple Amazon FCs allow you to bypass Amazon’s multi-destination fees while reducing overall freight costs by 40-50%.
2025 Updates and 2026 Service Changes to FBA Fulfillment Fees
Understanding these fee changes is crucial, but first ensure you know how to sell on Amazon effectively to build a profitable foundation despite fee fluctuations.
The 2025 updates brought stability, with Amazon focusing on cost reduction. You didn’t see increases in US referral and FBA fees during 2025, and there weren’t any new fee types introduced. However, 2026 brings significant changes with fee increases up to $0.51 per unit and the elimination of prep services.
Here’s what improved for your business in 2025 (and what’s changing in 2026):
Reduced Placement Fees
You’ll save an average of $0.58 per unit on inbound placement service fees for large bulky-size products with minimal shipment splits, starting January 15, 2025. To better understand how inbound placement fees work and impact your costs, consider our detailed breakdown.
New Selection Incentives
If you qualify for the FBA New Selection Program, you can get your inbound placement service fee waived for new parent ASINs in shipments created between December 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025.
Enhanced Low-Price FBA
Starting January 15, 2025, you benefited from the end of peak fulfillment fees, with Amazon applying non-peak 2025 Low-Price FBA rates for your products priced under $10. In 2026, the discount increased from $0.77 to $0.86 per unit.
SIPP Packaging Fee for Non-Certified Bulky Products
Starting January 15, 2026, Small and Large Bulky products that are not enrolled in the Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) program now incur an additional packaging fee averaging $2.07 per unit. This fee reflects the cost of Amazon providing packaging materials for these items.
For context, SIPP-enrolled bulky products ship in their original product packaging without any additional Amazon box, which reduces material and handling costs and Amazon passes that saving back to sellers. Products not meeting SIPP certification now pay the difference. If you sell bulky items and have not yet enrolled in SIPP, this $2.07 fee is a direct hit to your unit economics every month. Check our FBA Profit Calculator to see the exact impact on your margins.
Performance-Based Discounts
If you maintain an Inventory Performance Index (IPI) score above 500, Amazon rewards you with storage fee discounts up to 25%. A strong Amazon IPI score also helps protect you from unexpected storage limits during peak seasons.
FBA Fulfillment Fee 2026
The FBA fulfillment fee, formerly known as the “pick and pack” fee, is what Amazon charges you for each unit sold. The fee is based on your product’s category, size, and weight.
Understanding Amazon Fee Calculations
| Term | Simplified Meaning |
|---|---|
| Product size tier | Category based on product weight and dimensions, used to set storage and fee rates. |
| Shipping weight | The weight Amazon uses to calculate fees, based on unit weight or dimensional |
| Dimensional weight | A calculated weight based on product size, sometimes used instead of actual weight. |
| Fee category | Determines which fee rates apply to a product. |

Note: Your fees for small standard items and extra-large items over 150 lbs are determined by the actual weight. For other size categories, your fees depend on whichever is higher, the actual weight or the dimensional weight.
For instance, shipping a small box that weighs 10 lbs will cost you based on that 10 lbs.
Shipping a larger box that weighs 5 lbs but takes up a lot of space will cost you based on the higher value, such as 8 lbs dimensional weight.
FBA Referral Fees 2026
Referral fees remain unchanged for 2026. Amazon charges you a referral fee for every sale. This fee is a percentage of the total sales price, not including taxes handled by Amazon. The total sales price includes the item price plus any delivery or gift wrapping charges. The fee percentage depends on your product category.

Monthly Inventory Storage Fees 2026
Amazon charges monthly inventory storage fees for the space your products occupy in their fulfillment centers. These fees are based on your daily average inventory volume in cubic feet, calculated from units that are correctly packaged and ready to ship according to FBA requirements.
For sellers concerned about long-term costs, understanding Amazon long-term storage fees is crucial for inventory planning.
Monthly storage fees include:
Base monthly storage fee: Varies by product size and season.
Storage utilization surcharge: An additional fee based on product size and storage use, applicable only if eligibility criteria are met.
Dangerous goods fees: Separate rates apply for inventory classified as hazardous.
Values used to calculate fee
| Value | Simplified Explanation |
|---|---|
| Product size tier | Based on your item’s weight and dimensions. Check the Monthly Storage Fees report for your product’s size tier. |
| Current month | Fees change depending on the season. |
| Product volume | Measured as length × width × height of the packaged product. Fees are calculated per 10 cm³. Report shows past product volumes. |
| Average daily units | Fees are based on the average units stored daily, minus units pending removal. Report shows past averages. |
| Storage utilization ratio | Compares your stored inventory to shipped volume over 13 weeks. Determines any storage surcharge. Check FBA dashboard or report. |
| Dangerous goods classification status | Some items require special handling under the FBA Dangerous Goods program. Use ASIN lookup to check status. |

Returns Processing Fee Policy
You’ll be charged a returns processing fee for products (excluding apparel and shoes) that have high return rates in their category. This fee helps you manage operational expenses and reduce waste.
When fees apply
You’ll only be charged if your product’s return rate goes above the set threshold for its category.
The amount you pay depends on your product’s size tier and shipping weight.
How your return rate is calculated
- Your return rate is the percentage of units you ship in a given month that are returned within that month and the next two.
- You’ll pay fees on all returns that go above the threshold for your category.
- These charges will show up between the 7th–15th of the third month after you shipped the item.
When you’re exempt
- You won’t pay fees if you ship fewer than 25 units in a month.
- If you’re enrolled in FBA New Selection, you’ll get a waiver for up to 20 units per eligible parent ASIN.
- For products to qualify, they must be returned to a fulfilment centre within 180 days of their first arrival.
For Apparel & Shoes
- You’ll be charged a returns processing fee on every returned unit.
- There are no thresholds – fees are charged immediately once a return happens.

Common Seller Queries & Related FBA Fees (Categorized)
Using FBA isn’t just about paying fees; it’s about managing their unpredictability. Misclassified products drive up fulfilment charges, storage costs spike in peak seasons, and hidden expenses from returns quickly add up.
Reimbursements are often late or incomplete, leaving you to absorb losses. Over time, these setbacks eat away at your margins, making Amazon’s “streamlined” system feel more like a battle against inefficiency.
Without vigilant tracking and analysis, your profits can quietly disappear. We’ve listed some of the most common seller-related questions regarding each type of FBA fee you pay to Amazon.
Seller Queries Related to Fulfillment Fees

Final Thoughts
Managing your Amazon FBA fees can make the difference between thriving and just getting by. The fees aren’t simple. Fulfillment charges, storage surcharges, and hidden costs can quickly eat into your profits if you’re not careful – especially with 2026’s significant increases.
The 2026 changes are about more than $0.08 per unit:
- Prep accuracy matters more now, since Amazon stopped prepping units and charges a consolidated defect fee plus unplanned prep fees
- Storage strategy matters more with peak season fees running 3x normal rates
- Inventory timing becomes critical with aged fees starting at 181 days instead of 365
- Multi-channel fulfillment costs 10-15% more if you use FBA for non-Amazon orders
- Professional prep services are now mandatory.
Start planning and implementing changes now. Don’t wait until January 15, 2026 when the new fees take effect and you’re scrambling to react.
Implementing proven inventory management techniques and understanding how to increase Amazon profit margin will help you maintain profitability despite fee increases.
Treat fee optimization as an ongoing habit, not a one-time task. Know every charge, make use of the programs Amazon offers, and keep your inventory practices disciplined.
When you do this, FBA fees become a predictable part of your business instead of a surprise that drains your profits.
The effort you put in now will pay off in stronger margins and long-term success – especially critical as you navigate 2026’s changes.
Complete Amazon FBA Fees FAQs 2026
What is the 3.5% fuel surcharge and when did it start?
Amazon added a 3.5% fuel surcharge on April 17, 2026, applied to all FBA fulfillment fees in US and Canada. The surcharge is calculated on your fulfillment fee, not your sale price. For a $5 fulfillment fee, the surcharge adds $0.18 per unit.
How much more will I actually pay in 2026?
Most sellers pay 8-10% more, not Amazon’s advertised 0.5%. A seller with 1,000 units monthly of 6-pound products pays approximately $700 more per month ($8,400 annually) when combining fulfillment increases, fuel surcharge, storage rate hikes, and placement fee changes.
What are the current Amazon FBA fees for 2026?
Key rates: small standard 2 oz runs roughly $2.46 sub-$10 and about $3.32 in the $10 to $50 band, up to $6.97+ for large standard 3+ lb. Add the 3.5% fuel surcharge on top. Referral fees are 8-45% by category (most are 15%). Storage is $0.78/cubic foot (Jan-Sep) and $2.40 (Oct-Dec) for standard items. Add 3.5% fuel surcharge on all fulfillment fees.
Can I avoid the 2026 fee increases?
You can reduce impact by: optimizing packaging to lower size tiers, shipping to 5+ fulfillment centers (zero placement fees), maintaining 28+ days inventory supply, liquidating inventory before 150 days, enrolling in SIPP certification, and using professional prep services to avoid $0.32-$5.72 defect fees.
Is Amazon FBA worth it in 2026 despite fee increases?
Yes for products with 20%+ margins after all fees. Prime eligibility drives 25-40% higher conversion rates. FBA works best when you leverage cost-saving programs and optimize packaging. Consider alternatives if margins drop below 15% or products are very heavy/oversized with low prices.
What percentage does Amazon take in total fees?
Amazon takes 25-35% of sale price on average. Example $50 product: referral fee 15% ($7.50), fulfillment ($5.50), fuel surcharge ($0.19), storage ($0.65) = $13.84 total (27.7%). Electronics average 22-32%, most categories 25-35%, jewelry 35-45%.
How do I calculate Amazon FBA profit accurately?
Use this formula: Gross Revenue minus (Product Cost + Referral Fee + Fulfillment Fee + Fuel Surcharge + Storage + Aged Inventory Surcharge + Placement Fees + Advertising + Prep Costs) = Net Profit. Use our FBA Calculator for precise calculations with 2026 rates.
Which Amazon categories have the lowest FBA fees?
Lowest fee categories: Electronics (8% referral), Personal Care (8% referral), Books/Media (15% referral, favorable shipping), Small Appliances (15% referral). Total fees typically 20-30%. Avoid: Amazon Device Accessories (45% referral), heavy furniture, slow-moving jewelry.
How can I reduce my Amazon FBA fees in 2026?
Top strategies: Reduce packaging by 0.5 inches to drop size tiers. Use Amazon-optimized splits (5+ locations, $0 placement fee). Maintain 28+ days inventory to avoid low-level fees. Liquidate at 150 days before aged surcharges hit. Enroll in SIPP to save $0.25-$1.32/unit.

Monitor Seller Central notifications quarterly for program updates and seasonal surcharges like peak fulfillment fees (Oct-Dec).

Amazon charges this fee when your inventory falls below 28 days of historical supply at the FNSKU level. The fee applies to standard-size, Small Bulky, and Large Bulky products. Maintain at least 28 days of supply based on recent sales velocity to avoid this penalty.
What are Amazon inbound placement fees?
Fees charged when Amazon distributes your inventory across multiple fulfillment centers. Rates: $0.14-$1.50 per unit depending on weight. Options: Minimal splits (1 location, highest fee), Partial splits (2-3 locations, reduced fee), Amazon-optimized (5+ locations, $0 fee). Choose optimized splits to eliminate this cost.
What happened to Amazon FBA prep services?
Amazon discontinued all prep and labeling services on January 1, 2026. All inventory must arrive fully prepped and compliant. Shipments that arrive late, misrouted, or non-compliant face a consolidated inbound defect fee averaging $0.60 per unit, plus unplanned prep fees that vary by size. Options: self-prep, supplier prep, or third-party prep centers.
How do Amazon returns processing fees work?
Returns fees apply to categories with high return rates. For non-apparel: fee applies only when your return rate exceeds category threshold. For apparel/shoes: fee applies to every return. Exempt if you ship fewer than 25 units monthly. FBA New Selection waives fees for first 20 units per ASIN.
What is Amazon Low-Price FBA?
Products priced under $10 automatically qualify for Low-Price FBA rates, saving $0.86 per unit vs standard FBA (up from $0.77 in 2025). Benefits: same Prime delivery speeds, free shipping for Prime customers, better economics for high-volume low-price items like accessories and beauty products.
When do Amazon peak fulfillment fees apply?
Amazon’s 2026-2027 holiday peak fulfillment fees apply from October 15, 2026, through January 14, 2027. The peak increase over non-peak rates remains unchanged from last year, averaging $0.32 per unit in the U.S. However, total fulfillment fees are not necessarily identical to last year because Amazon updated its 2026 base rates. The 3.5% fuel and logistics-related surcharge also applies on top.
What is the Amazon Overmax handling fee?
Extra-Large products exceeding 96 inches on longest side or 130 inches in combined length plus girth are classified as Overmax. Surcharge: $17-$25 per unit on top of standard fulfillment fees. Effective January 15, 2026. A product costing $33.55 to fulfill in 2025 costs $50.55 in 2026 with surcharge.
How do I avoid Amazon long-term storage fees?
Monitor inventory age monthly. Remove or liquidate products approaching 150 days (before 181-day surcharge threshold). Use Inventory Performance Dashboard to track aged inventory. Consider promotions, deals, or removal orders for slow-movers. Aged inventory costs escalate: 181 days (first tier), 12 months ($0.30/unit), 15+ months ($0.35/unit).

AWD works for bulk storage with auto-replenishment. Compare against 3PL options, especially for West Coast inventory.
How do Multi-Channel Fulfillment fees compare to FBA?
MCF uses FBA network for non-Amazon orders (Shopify, Walmart, etc.). 2026 MCF fees increased $0.30 per unit (10-15% increase). Fuel surcharge applies starting May 2, 2026. MCF lacks Prime badge but offers FBA fulfillment quality. Best for sellers wanting unified fulfillment across multiple channels.
What is SIPP certification and how does it reduce fees?
Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) means products ship in original packaging without Amazon box. Saves $0.25-$1.32 per unit on standard items. Small/Large Bulky products not SIPP certified pay additional $2.07 packaging fee. Enroll eligible products to reduce per-unit costs and improve sustainability.
How does the fuel surcharge affect my costs?
The 3.5% surcharge applies to fulfillment fees, not sale price. Example: $6 fulfillment fee × 3.5% = $0.21 surcharge. At 10,000 monthly units, that’s $2,100/month or $25,200 annually. Amazon calls it temporary but similar carrier surcharges became permanent. Factor into pricing and margin calculations now.
When exactly do 2026 FBA fees take effect?
January 15, 2026 at 12:00 AM PST for fulfillment, storage, and placement fees. April 17, 2026 for fuel surcharge (FBA, Remote Fulfillment). May 2, 2026 for fuel surcharge on MCF and Buy with Prime. March 1, 2026 for updated disposal/removal fee timing.
What triggers inbound defect fees?
Common triggers: mislabeled shipments, delivery to the wrong warehouse, deleted shipment plans, abandoned inventory past 30 days, and non-compliant prep. Amazon charges a consolidated inbound defect fee averaging $0.60 per unit. Prevention: use professional prep, follow packaging requirements, verify routing, and complete shipments within 30 days.
How do I know my product’s FBA size tier?
Amazon categorizes by dimensions and weight: Small standard (≤18″×14″×8″, ≤1 lb), Large standard (>small standard, ≤20 lb, ≤18″ longest side), Large bulky (18-37″ longest side or 20-50 lb), Extra-large (>large bulky).
Can I switch between FBA and FBM?
Yes. Most sellers use hybrid strategies based on product type, margins, and seasonality. FBA offers Prime eligibility and higher conversion rates. FBM provides margin control and flexibility. Compare FBA vs FBM economics per SKU. Consider 3PL for middle-ground option with better rates than FBA.
How do referral fees differ by category?
Referral fees range 8-45%: Electronics/Computers (8%), most categories (15%), Clothing (5-17% tiered), Jewelry (20% up to $250), Amazon Device Accessories (45%). Minimum $0.30 per item most categories. Some categories have tiered structures.
What is dimensional weight and how does it affect fees?
Dimensional weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 139. Amazon charges based on whichever is greater: actual weight or dimensional weight. Example: 5 lb actual weight but 8 lb dimensional weight = charged for 8 lb. Optimize packaging to reduce dimensional weight and lower fees.
Are Amazon FBA fees tax deductible?
Yes, FBA fees are ordinary business expenses and tax deductible. Track: fulfillment fees, referral fees, storage fees, removal fees, advertising costs, prep costs. Maintain detailed records in accounting software. Consult tax professional for specific deduction strategies and proper categorization.
