Detailed Cost Breakdown
How the import duty calculator works
- Pick the origin and destination. The UK and Canada sit at the top of the list.
- Add the product category, value, quantity, freight and insurance. A commodity code sharpens the estimate if you have one.
- Get duty, import VAT or GST, and fees in one breakdown. Export or print it for your landed-cost sheet.
What your estimate includes
Each estimate covers three costs. Customs duty depends on the commodity code and where the goods were made.
Import VAT or GST comes next. In most cases it’s charged on the goods value plus the duty, so duty raises the tax too.
Processing fees cover the clearance charges each destination adds. Anti-dumping duties and excise on alcohol or tobacco sit outside the estimate.
UK import duty and VAT
Importing into the UK means two charges on most shipments: customs duty and 20% import VAT. Duty depends on the commodity code and where the goods were made.
The £135 line matters most for parcels. At or below £135, no duty is collected and the seller charges VAT at checkout. Above it, duty and VAT are due at the border.
Once goods clear, AMZ Prep’s Southampton warehouse can receive them for Amazon UK or direct orders.
US to UK
Most electronics enter at 0% duty, while clothing can reach 12%. Import VAT of 20% applies on top.
China to UK
Standard UK tariff rates apply, from 0% to 17% by product. Some goods, such as certain steel products, also carry anti-dumping duty.
EU to UK
Goods that meet the trade deal’s origin rules enter duty-free. VAT is still due, and a customs declaration is still required.
India to UK
The India-UK trade deal took effect on 15 July 2026. Most Indian goods, including textiles and footwear, now enter at 0% duty with proof of origin. Import VAT of 20% still applies.
UK VAT worked example
The UK charges duty on the customs value: goods plus freight and insurance. VAT then lands on that value plus the duty. Here’s a shipment with an assumed 4% duty rate:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Goods value | £1,000 |
| Freight and insurance | £100 |
| Customs value | £1,100 |
| Duty at 4% (illustrative rate) | £44 |
| VAT at 20% on £1,144 | £228.80 |
| Total duty and VAT | £272.80 |
The duty adds £8.80 of VAT on its own. Small, but it compounds on large orders.
Canada import duty, GST and HST
Canada charges customs duty, then sales tax on the duty-paid value. Which sales tax depends on the province.
GST is 5% everywhere. Harmonized provinces replace it with HST: 13% in Ontario and 14% to 15% in the Atlantic provinces. BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec add their own provincial tax on top of GST.
Unlike the UK, Canada generally leaves international freight out of the value for duty. The calculator follows that rule when Canada is the destination.
US to Canada
Goods that qualify under CUSMA enter duty-free. GST or HST still applies. Courier shipments from the US get higher tax-free and duty-free thresholds than other imports.
China to Canada
Standard Canadian tariff rates apply, up to 18% by product. GST or HST applies on top. Some goods also carry anti-dumping duty.
UK to Canada
The UK-Canada Trade Continuity Agreement keeps most qualifying UK goods duty-free. Proof of origin is needed. GST or HST applies either way.
Canada HST worked example
Take CAD 1,000 of US-made goods that qualify under CUSMA. Duty is 0%, so tax decides the bill.
| Destination province | Tax | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | GST 5% | CAD 50 |
| Ontario | HST 13% | CAD 130 |
Same goods, CAD 80 apart. The province you ship to matters as much as the tariff.
For imports into the US, use the US tariff calculator. It covers Section 301, Section 232 and current US tariff rates by HTS code.
EU and other destinations
The calculator covers EU countries and most major markets beyond the UK and Canada. The logic is the same: duty by commodity code and origin, then VAT or GST on top.
EU VAT rates differ by country, from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary. EU low-value rules are changing, so check the threshold before quoting one.
For a binding rate, ask the destination’s customs authority for an advance tariff ruling.

FAQs
Common Questions About Import Duty and Tax Calculator
Yes. The calculator is free and needs no sign-up. Enter your origin, destination, product value, freight and insurance. You’ll see estimated duty, import VAT or GST, and fees in one breakdown.
Chinese goods face 20-45% total duty when imported to the USA: 20% base tariff (10% reciprocal + 10% fentanyl) plus Section 301 tariffs of 7.5-25% depending on product. The $800 de minimis exemption does NOT apply to China. Use our China import duty calculator for exact rates.
UK import VAT is usually 20%. It’s charged on the customs value plus duty. Customs value means the goods price plus freight and insurance to the UK. Some goods, like children’s clothing, carry 0% VAT.
Look up HS codes at: hts.usitc.gov (USA), trade-tariff.service.gov.uk (UK), or cbsa-asfc.gc.ca (Canada). Enter the code in our HS code duty calculator for the most accurate rate. The first 6 digits are universal; the last 2-4 vary by country.
At or below £135, no customs duty is collected. The seller or marketplace charges UK VAT at checkout instead. Above £135, duty and import VAT are due at the border. Excise goods follow separate rules.
Canada charges 5% GST on the duty-paid value of imports. Ontario and the Atlantic provinces use HST instead, at 13% to 15%. BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec add provincial tax on top.
US goods that meet CUSMA rules of origin enter Canada duty-free. You’ll need proof of origin to claim the rate. GST or HST still applies, and non-qualifying goods pay the standard Canadian tariff.
Most Indian goods now enter the UK at 0% duty. The India-UK trade deal took effect on 15 July 2026. You’ll need proof of origin to claim it. Import VAT of 20% still applies.
Search the UK Trade Tariff for UK imports, or the CBSA customs tariff for Canada. The first six digits match worldwide. The last digits differ by country, so check the destination’s own tariff.
No. The calculator gives an estimate from published rates. Your final bill can change with the commodity code, origin and valuation. For a binding rate, apply for an advance tariff ruling from HMRC or CBSA.
