We all know that Amazon FBA has a strict set of packaging rules and if you’re an FBA seller using custom packaging, this blog is a perfect read for you. Just imagine this: you’ve invested in premium, branded packaging for your product, but because it didn’t meet Amazon’s FBA requirements, it is returned by the customer. Frustrating, right?

That’s where Amazon’s Seller Input Packaging Program (SIPP) comes in to help you maintain brand identity while meeting Amazon’s rigorous standards. SIPP allows your carefully designed custom packaging to flow seamlessly through Amazon’s fulfillment centers without modification or rejection.

This blog is a perfect read for every eCommerce seller who wants to know about Amazon FBA guidelines and strategies to ensure product safety while preserving their unique brand experience through custom packaging. Let’s get started with understanding how SIPP can transform your FBA packaging strategy!

How Amazon FBA Works for Custom Packaging?

Custom packaging helps your brand stand out. But with Amazon FBA, you need to follow strict prep and packaging rules. From labeling requirements to packaging dimensions, every detail must meet FBA standards to avoid delays or rejections.

This section walks you through each step of the FBA process using custom packaging without breaking compliance. You’ll learn how to register for FBA, list and assign products to FBA, and much more.

Step 1: Register for FBA

Create an Amazon seller account (if you don’t have one), then log in to Seller Central. Before registering for FBA, understand Amazon’s packaging rules if you plan to use custom or branded packaging.

Step 2: List and Assign Products to FBA

You can assign FBA to all or some of your eligible products. During listing, select “Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA)” under the fulfillment method. Make sure your custom-packaged products meet FBA requirements and aren’t part of restricted categories. You can also use Amazon’s Revenue Calculator to estimate fees based on your packaging dimensions and weight.

Step 3: Prepare and Ship Inventory to Amazon

With the use of send to Amazon workflow you can create your shipment. It walks you through prepping, packing, and labeling your products before sending them to Amazon’s fulfillment centers.

Custom packaging must follow Amazon’s rules like sealing, and labeling requirements especially if you’re aiming for SIPP. You can also use Amazon’s FBA Prep or Label Service but not ideal for products with unique packaging.

Step 4: Let Amazon Handle Fulfillment

Once your product arrives, Amazon stores it safely in their inventory. When a customer places an order, Amazon picks, packs, ships the product, and even manages customer service and returns. If your custom packaging qualifies under SIPP and your product ships in its original box there is no Amazon overbox needed.

Step 5: Manage Your Inventory

Stay on top of your stock levels with tools like the FBA Dashboard, Restock Alerts, and the FBA Inventory Manager. Monitoring inventory is crucial, especially for custom-packaged products that may have higher prep or size-related costs.

Step 6: Expand and Optimize Your Business

Once your FBA flow is smooth, you can expand your business with features like Amazon Global Logistics, Remote Fulfillment with FBA, or Amazon Export to reach international customers. Custom packaging that meets FFP or SIPP standards is often better suited for global fulfillment protecting the product and your brand.

Why Custom Packaging Matters for Amazon FBA Sellers?

If you’re an Amazon FBA seller looking to boost your business operations, enjoy seamless FBA integrations, and happy customers, you must be well aware of the Amazon packaging rules. The rules are not just about compliance but they are made to simplify your fulfillment, protect your products, and improve customer satisfaction.

Let’s explore why custom packaging matters for Amazon FBA sellers:

Amazon’s Packaging Standards

The reason behind amazon packaging standard is to reduce damage while in transit. It is mandatory that your products pass through the 3-foot drop test and have void fill, seals and structural support. This way you will have reduced return rates due to product breakage.

Let’s say, you’re selling a fragile product like glassware or electronics. According to Amazon’s guidelines, your product needs to be covered using bubble wrap with at least 2 inches of cushioning between the product and the outer box. The box must be rated ECT-32 or higher to withstand the shipping process.

When everything goes right, and while the product reaches the customer safely, you have a high chance of getting a 5-star rating and repeat purchases.

Compliant Packaging Process Faster

Most of the Amazon fulfillment centers are highly automated. So, following Amazon’s dimensional and weight standards, make sure the products move quickly once the product is received, picked, packed and shipped without causing any delays.

To make the products ship faster, you must use scannable barcode scanners and place them according to amazon barcode fba requirements, ensuring they remain flat on the outside of the packaging.. Packages must also be properly sealed and labeled, with units separated and bagged when appropriate.

Compliant packaging gets processed faster, avoiding hurdles, manual checks, or added prep fees. This leads to faster Prime eligibility and more consistent delivery speeds.

Dimensional Accuracy Reduces FBA Storage and Shipping Costs

Amazon charges not only for the products kept inside the box but also they charge fulfillment fees based on the size and weight of your packaged products, making it important to calculate the CBM accurately before finalizing packaging dimensions. If your packaging is oversized or under-filled packaging, it can lead to a more expensive FBA tier, especially if it is a peak season.

Smart packaging will help you maximize your margins, especially for high-volume or seasonal products where storage costs can be high.

Eco-Friendly Packaging

Amazon’s Frustration-Free Packaging (FFP) and Ships in Own Container (SIOC) programs focus more on sustainable, efficient, and customer-friendly packaging. They believe sellers who meet these criteria not only reduce waste, but often gain more visibility via the Climate Pledge Friendly badge.

All you have to do is ensure your packaging is recyclable and does not contain any unnecessary materials. Your product must be easy to open without any use of tools. The product should be able to ship without any need of additional Amazon overboxing.

Brands that meet FFP standards often see higher conversion rates and better placement in search results, especially as more shoppers filter by ‘sustainable’ or ‘eco-friendly’ options.

Compliant Packaging Builds Trust with Amazon

Compliant packaging not only builds trust with Amazon but also with your customers. Though customers love aesthetic packaging, it’s also about how your packaging looks professional and reliable.

According to Fulfillment by Amazon, when a seller meets their prep guidelines and packaging requirements, the inventory flow will be smoother throughout the process. This will help you earn brand trust with Amazon especially when delivering new products with higher volumes.

Amazon’s Custom Packaging Requirements

Custom packaging is more than getting a job done. Yes, it is more like giving your customers a reason to choose you over other competitors. Custom packaging showcases how expertise your brand is through the package, colors and designs.

To meet Amazon’s Ships in Own Container (SIOC) standards, there are certain guidelines you follow to ensure your product’s protection and compatibility with automated fulfillment processes.

Rigid Packaging Construction Standards

For custom rigid box packaging to qualify under Amazon’s certification programs, it must have a six-sided, enclosed structure usually in rectangular or cube-shaped. L-shaped or irregular boxes are not accepted as they do not meet the structural requirements for automated handling.

If your product’s primary packaging is a display-style box that are collectibles or gift sets, it’s recommended to use a right-sized overbox to give your products the necessary protection and meet SIOC standards. Key construction rules include:

  • Packaging must be completely enclosed—no cut-outs, or protrusions such as handles, hang tabs, or decorative elements.
  • Hand holes for carrying are permitted but must not exceed 3.5″ x 1.0″ (8.89 cm x 2.54 cm) in size.
  • The package should have a rigid structure to support stacking and mechanical handling during storage and shipping.

Sealing Requirements for Rigid Packaging

To ensure product safety during fulfillment and delivery, all open edges of the packaging must be securely sealed. This helps prevent accidental openings, contamination, or damage during transport. There are certain sealing guidelines that a seller must follow:

  • Staples are not permitted as a sealing method.
  • For packaging types like 1-2-3 bottom flaps, auto-lock bases, and tuck-and-lock tabs, Amazon recommends adding tape for extra security.
  • Tape-free packaging can be approved only if it successfully passes ISTA 6 SIOC testing.

Packaging Guidelines for Fragile and Liquid Products

There are some packaging guidelines that a seller must follow while shipping fragile and liquid products. The below-mentioned products are considered to be fragile or liquid and therefore require more care compared to other products.

  • Porcelain, glass, clay or ceramic types of products (e.g., mugs, vases, dinnerware, or glass jars).
  • Products that include liquids and semi-liquids (e.g., beverages, lotions, oils, gels, or cleaning products).
  • Solids that can melt or change when there are fluctuations in temperature during the shipping cycle (typically between 70°F and 140°F or 21.1°C to 60°C).

These products have a high chance to break or be prone to leakage while transporting, so they must be treated with extra care to prevent in-transit damage and customer dissatisfaction.

Packaging Guidelines for Sensitive Products

Sensitive products have to be eligible for SIPP (Ships in Product Packaging) certification. Ensure the sensitive products you sell follow specific packaging protocols to give your customers a positive experience.

Sensitive products should be packaged in non-descriptive boxes or in opaque packaging to maintain your customer’s privacy. The packaging must not reveal the nature of the product inside visually or through labeling.

This way as a seller you can improve customer satisfaction, prevent embarrassment, and maintain Amazon’s standards for respectful delivery practices. Some of the sensitive products include, bed-wetting aids, personal hygiene items and other health or lifestyle products marketed for adult use.

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) Price Structure

As of January 15, 2026, Amazon restructured FBA fees with more granular pricing based on size, weight, AND price point. Fees increased an average of $0.08 per unit (less than 0.5%) but vary significantly:

Fee Changes by Price Point:

  • Items under $10: Enhanced low-price FBA discounts (avg. $0.86 savings)
  • Items $10-$50: Average +$0.25 per unit
  • Items over $50: +$0.31 to +$0.51 per unit (varies by size)
  • Extra-Large items: $2.08 average DECREASE
  • New tiers: Small Bulky and Large Bulky categories

Important: Custom packaging affects your size tier and weight, which directly impacts fees. Use Amazon’s Revenue Calculator to determine exact costs for your specific packaging dimensions and weight.

Common Packaging Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

When you’re shipping through Amazon FBA or trying to get SIPP certification, packaging mistakes can cost you more than just a few unhappy customers. They can lead to product rejections, poor customer reviews, and higher return rates.

Here are the top five packaging mistakes sellers make and how to avoid them:

Using Non-Compliant Box Structures

One of the common mistakes most sellers make is shipping products in boxes that aren’t fully enclosed or don’t have six solid sides (like L-shaped or open display boxes).

To avoid this ensure you always use rigid, six-sided boxes that are cube or rectangular. If the product’s original box doesn’t meet these standards, use a right-sized overbox to comply.

So you may have a question why? The reason is Amazon’s fulfillment systems are built around automation. If your package has irregular shapes that may disrupt the shipping process. This will increase the risk of product damage, and are not eligible for SIPP certification.

Choosing Weak Corrugated Materials

Another mistake is packing the products with thin or flimsy cardboard that fails under pressure especially when stacked during shipping or warehousing.

To avoid this always double check your outer packaging meets ECT-32 or better (depending on the weight of the item). In case, if you’re shipping heavy products, consider double-wall or ECT-44 corrugated boards.

Skipping Drop Testing for Fragile or Custom Packaging

Most of the time, as a seller you assume the box looks strong enough with its appearance. But, it may fail in the drop testing process. Amazon expects the products to go through a drop testing method especially if it is fragile, liquid, or sensitive items.

To avoid this, you run ISTA 6-A tests to verify it can survive real-world conditions. Ensure to protect your product with foam, molded pulp, or air cushions.

Improper Sealing for Liquids and Semi-Liquids

Shipping liquids without secondary seals or without leak-proof containment inside the package is another common mistake most of the sellers make. This can damage the product, other inventory, and your seller rating. Amazon requires that liquids are double-sealed and protected from leaks.

To avoid this, use a tight-fitting primary seal (like a cap or pump) and add a secondary seal such as shrink wrap or tape. Make sure to enclose the product in a sealed poly bag or overbox.

Misplaced or Unscannable Labels

Another mistake is placing FNSKU or shipping labels across seams, edges, or curved surfaces where they can’t be scanned properly. When the label is not visible properly, that may cause delays at the fulfillment center or even rejection of your product.

To avoid this problem make sure barcodes are clear, legible, and not covered or wrinkled. If your product is in a poly bag, place the label on the bag’s center surface and not on a fold or wrinkle.

Conclusion

As a seller, it’s important to understand all the guidelines mentioned in the blog. Though Amazon FBA follows strict guidelines, remember it is to protect your product from getting rejected. Also, following the guidelines you can improve customer retention and grow your business.
