What is Amazon Multi channel Fulfillment??

Amazon’s Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) program helps businesses that sell outside the Amazon Marketplace.

MCF lets you use Amazon’s fulfillment network for orders from your website or other e-commerce channels. It works with e-commerce applications like Shopify and BigCommerce, or developers can use MCF’s APIs for custom integrations.

As you send your inventory to an Amazon fulfillment center, MCF takes care of the entire fulfillment process for orders placed off Amazon. This includes picking the correct items, packing them securely, and shipping them directly to your customers.

Throughout this process, you’ll receive real-time tracking updates for each package, regardless of the carrier used.

Additionally, MCF offers the option to have customer returns sent back to an Amazon fulfillment center, where they can be easily integrated back into your inventory.

Benefits of Amazon MCF

  1. Offer competitive delivery speed
  2. Centralized Inventory Management and Efficient Fulfillment
  3. Maintain your Brand Identity
  4. Explore multi-channel Sales with simple integrations
  5. Transparent and Cost-Effective Pricing

Offer competitive delivery speed

MCF allows you to provide your customers with a variety of delivery options, mirroring the speed of Amazon Prime.

Choose from 1-day, 2-day, or standard (3-5 business day) delivery to meet your customers’ needs and preferences.

Centralized Inventory Management and Efficient Fulfillment

Simplify your operations by managing your entire online business from a single inventory source.

MCF offers automatic inventory placement across Canada, ensuring your products are strategically positioned closer to your customers for faster deliveries.

Additionally, MCF takes care of the entire fulfillment process, freeing you to focus on other aspects of your business.

Maintain your Brand Identity

MCF utilizes unbranded packaging for your orders. This ensures your customers receive their products in packaging that does not display any Amazon logos or branding, allowing you to maintain a consistent brand experience for your business.

Please note that unbranded packaging is only available for specific inventory sizes (not exceeding 45.72 x 35.56 x 20.32 cm and/or 9 kg) and excludes non-sortable items.
You can choose to utilize unbranded packaging for all eligible orders at no additional cost by selecting the “ship only in unbranded packaging” option during order creation.

Explore multi-channel Sales with simple integrations

MCF offers seamless integration with popular e-commerce platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, 3dcart, and Magento through API plugins.

This allows you to manage your MCF inventory and fulfill orders efficiently across all your sales channels.

Transparent and Cost-Effective Pricing

MCF offers a straightforward pricing structure that’s easy to understand and budget for.

You’ll pay a single, all-inclusive fee that covers picking, packing, and shipping your products.

There are no upfront costs to get started with MCF, and you’ll only be charged when your orders ship. This transparent amazon mcf pricing model allows for clear cost forecasting and simplifies your financial management.

Limitations of  Amazon MCF

Limitation on Product Category

While Amazon’s Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) program offers a wealth of benefits, it’s important to ensure compatibility with your product line before diving in.

Just like Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), MCF has restrictions on certain product categories.

For example, there may be limitations on the types of artwork or beauty products you can fulfill through MCF.

To avoid any surprises, it’s important to review Amazon’s restricted products list. This simple step will confirm whether MCF aligns with your product portfolio and prevent any potential roadblocks down the line.

Secure your Brand Identity

While Amazon MCF offers a robust fulfillment solution, it’s important to consider its impact on your brand identity.

By default, MCF utilizes Amazon-branded packaging for orders. An alternative is unbranded packaging, with plain boxes and tape, but this option has size limitations.

To mitigate any potential drawbacks, focus on strong brand presentation throughout your product journey.

Invest in high-quality initial packaging, branded internal wrapping, embossing, or stickers. This ensures a lasting brand impression for your customers, even when utilizing MCF fulfillment.

Costlier than FBA

While FBA offers advantages like streamlined integration and potentially lower fulfillment costs for Amazon-based sales, it’s important to recognize that MCF remains a viable option for those focused on non-Amazon marketplaces.

However, it’s worth noting that MCF generally incurs higher fees compared to FBA. This is understandable, as FBA sellers represent a more committed customer base for Amazon. Therefore, the cost-effectiveness of each program depends on your specific sales channels and fulfillment needs.

Checklist for Sellers to Consider MCF

If you have your own e-commerce website

Can I use Amazon MCF without selling on Amazon?

MCF allows you to seamlessly integrate your website with Amazon’s vast fulfillment network. This translates to faster, more reliable shipping and handling for your customers, ultimately enhancing their buying experience and fostering long-term loyalty.

2024 Amazon MCF Fees Highlights

Here’s a breakdown of upcoming updates to MCF fees amazon and size tiers in the US, effective from February 5, 2024:

  • MCF fees will see an average increase of 3.5% across all delivery speeds. This is good news, as it falls below the industry average increase of 5.9% announced by other carriers.
  • For products under 1 pound, MCF fees will either remain the same or potentially decrease for standard shipping speeds. This provides a cost advantage for sellers of smaller, lightweight items.
  • We’re introducing a new, smaller size tier for items weighing just 4 ounces. Additionally, we’re replacing the existing “Oversize” tiers with “Large Bulky” and “Extra-Large” categories to better reflect product dimensions.

For a complete overview of these changes, please visit the dedicated page on 2024 fulfillment fees for Multi-Channel Fulfillment orders.

Can I use Amazon MCF for eBay?

eBay sellers may utilize Amazon’s Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) service to manage order fulfillment, provided the packaging is generic and excludes Amazon branding. Additionally, sellers must rely on alternative delivery providers for the final leg of the delivery process, as Amazon’s in-house last-mile delivery service cannot be employed in this context.

If you are a multi-channel e-commerce retailer

Manage your sales channels, streamline fulfillment, and optimize inventory, all in one place. This reduces errors, and shipping costs, and simplifies order tracking for a smoother operation.

For sellers juggling multiple platforms like eBay, Walmart, and Shopify, MCF offers a centralized hub.

If you are a seasonal seller

Amazon MCF rates can be your saving grace!

By leveraging their fulfillment network, you can ditch the hassle of managing your warehouse and shipping.

MCF allows for agile inventory management, letting you easily scale up or down as needed. This translates to cost savings, as you only pay for the fulfillment services you actually use.

So, focus on your products and sales, and let MCF handle the unpredictable peaks and valleys.

If you are an international e-commerce seller

MCF is a game-changer.

Imagine storing your inventory closer to customers worldwide thanks to Amazon’s global fulfillment network.

This translates to reduced shipping costs and faster delivery times, giving you a competitive edge against local sellers.

Thus, increasing international sales and a happier customer base across the globe.

If you are a high-volume seller

You can unlock a world of efficiency with MCF.

Automating and streamlining your fulfillment processes reduces errors, saves valuable time, and ultimately boosts customer satisfaction.

By outsourcing fulfillment to Amazon’s experts, you’re free to concentrate on strategic growth areas like marketing, product development, and exceptional customer service.

This allows you to scale your business with confidence, knowing your fulfillment needs are in capable hands.

To be noted

Throughout this exploration of MCF, a fascinating trend emerges. One might be led to believe that only established, internationally-renowned businesses with overflowing coffers can truly benefit from this service.

After all, who else could afford such a premium solution?

But perhaps, dear reader, MCF isn’t just for the titans of industry!

Perhaps it can empower businesses of all sizes to streamline operations and reach new heights.

Let’s delve deeper and discover if MCF can be the secret weapon that propels your business forward, regardless of its current scale.

This past holiday season was a record-breaker, capping off a very strong year for Amazon in 2023,” stated Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon.

“We achieved significant growth in revenue, operating income, and free cash flow. Beyond these financial results, we’re particularly proud of the ongoing innovation and improvements we’ve made to the customer experience across all our business segments.

For example, regionalizing our U.S. fulfillment network allowed us to achieve the fastest delivery times ever for Prime members, while also reducing our fulfillment costs.”

Amazon’s advertising services experienced a significant upswing in Q4 of 2023, generating over $14 billion in revenue. This represents a substantial increase of 27% compared to the same period in the previous year.

Jassy, CEO of Amazon

The holiday season in Q4 typically brings a surge in sales activity for Amazon and its sellers. To meet this increased demand, Amazon implements various strategies to support sellers and make maximum profit out of it. Amazon services for its sellers, such as FBA, new seller incentives, and warehouse deals, are a few of the supportive tools it provides to its sellers. These tools can streamline fulfillment processes and potentially boost sales during this peak period.

It’s important to note that, as a business entity, Amazon adjusts its fee structures throughout the year to maintain profitability. This may include fluctuations in fulfillment, storage, and warehousing costs for sellers during Q4. However, these adjustments (hike  in MCF and FBA  fees) are often implemented to ensure smooth operations and efficient service for both sellers and consumers during the busiest shopping season.

For sellers, staying informed about potential Q4 fee adjustments is crucial for informed decision-making. Transparency around fees allows sellers to plan their strategies effectively and maximize their success during the holiday season.

It’s important to note that fulfillment costs can fluctuate based on various factors, including seasonality. While some sellers might experience higher MCF amazon fees during peak sales periods like Q4, 3PL providers like AMZ Prep, often offer consistent pricing structures.

Therefore, exploring 3PL options can provide valuable cost predictability, particularly for businesses managing seasonal fluctuations in demand.

Additional Fees Conditions

While MCF offers a transparent pricing structure, additional fees and surcharges may apply to your orders.

These are typically outlined in the MCF fee schedule.

Lithium Batteries

An additional $0.11 per unit will be added to the base fulfillment fee for products containing lithium batteries or individual lithium batteries.

Block Amazon Logistics as a carrier

A 5% surcharge will be applied to your MCF orders if you choose to restrict fulfillment by Amazon Logistics. This allows you more control over the carrier used for your shipments but at an additional cost.*

Remote area Delivery

Deliveries to certain locations, including Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, may incur a remote area surcharge. This surcharge is typically 100% for standard-sized items and 200% for large bulky and extra-large items. Be sure to factor in these potential surcharges when calculating your overall fulfillment costs.*

Other applicable non-fulfillment fees

Please note that MCF pricing focuses solely on the fulfillment process (picking, packing, shipping).

Other fees, such as storage, labeling, inbound logistics to Amazon fulfillment centers, and inventory removal fees, are separate and remain consistent with Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) pricing.

For detailed information on these additional fees, please refer to the FBA features, services, and fees section on Amazon Seller Central.

*The surcharges for blocking Amazon Logistics or for remote area delivery are calculated after adding any applicable lithium battery fees to the item’s base fulfillment fee.

Size Matters? Yes, Product size does!

In Amazon’s Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF), product size tiers play a crucial role in determining fulfillment costs.

These tiers aren’t just about weight, they consider a combination of factors.

The unit weight of your product is certainly important, but so are its actual dimensions (length, width, and height). MCF also calculates a “dimensional weight” based on these dimensions, which can sometimes be higher than the actual weight.

Ultimately, whichever weight (actual or dimensional) is greater determines your product’s size tier.

This ensures a fair cost assessment based on the space your product occupies in Amazon’s fulfillment centers.

Storage Fees

Since storing your inventory in any fulfillment center comes at a cost, Amazon MCF charges monthly fees based on how much space your products occupy.

Several factors influence these storage fees:

  • Product Type

The type of product you’re storing plays an important role in the storage cost.

  • Size Tier

As explained earlier, MCF categorizes products into size tiers based on weight and dimensions. Larger size tiers typically incur higher storage fees.

  • Time of Year

Storage fees can fluctuate throughout the year, with peak seasons like holidays sometimes experiencing increased rates.

  • Storage Utilization Ratio

A complex metric, the storage utilization ratio considers how efficiently Amazon utilizes its fulfillment center space. When storage space is at a premium, fees might be temporarily adjusted.

For a more detailed breakdown of monthly inventory storage fees for Amazon MCF, you can visit the “monthly inventory storage fees” section on Amazon Seller Central (login required).
