2026-27 Carrier Peak Season Surcharges: Every Rate, Date and Threshold

Peak season is not one surcharge window. It is eight, they open on seven different dates between September 27 and October 26, and the one most likely to catch you is whichever carrier you assumed was already covered.

This page lists the published 2026-27 US peak surcharges for the carriers moving AMZ Prep volume: UPS, FedEx, USPS, Amazon Shipping, DHL eCommerce, SpeedX, Veho and UniUni. Dates, dollar amounts and the exact thresholds that trigger each one.

It covers both sides of a brand’s shipping. If you ship DTC from Shopify, Walmart, TikTok Shop or your own store, the surcharges that matter are on outbound parcels, and they turn on dimensions more than weight. If you also send inventory into Amazon, there’s a second set of dates that collides with Amazon’s own fee calendar. Both are below.

Key takeaway: November 22 to December 26 is the expensive stretch on every carrier that tiers its rates. Anything heavy, oversized or irregularly packaged should move before November 22 if the inventory plan allows it.

DTC parcel costs

Which surcharges actually hit a DTC parcel?

For most ecommerce brands the per-package demand surcharge is not the problem. On ground services it runs $0.40 to $4.05 a parcel at published rates, and $0.25 on FedEx Ground at AMZ Prep’s rate. The charges that reshape a Q4 P&L are the dimensional ones. The smallest, $8.75, is more than ten times the residential demand charge at UPS or FedEx.

If your parcelUPSFedEx (published)FedEx (AMZ Prep rate)Amazon Shipping
Stays at or under 48 in longest side, 30 in second side, 10,368 cu in and 50 lbs$0$0$0$0
Triggers Additional Handling: over 48 in longest side, 30 in second side, 10,368 cu in or 50 lbs, or non-standard packaging$8.75 to $11.90$8.80 to $11.85$4.40 to $5.93$8.75 to $11.90
Triggers Large Package / Oversize: over 96 in length, 130 in length plus girth, 17,280 cu in or 110 lbs$96.25 to $117.50$95.75 to $117.25$47.88 to $58.63$96.25 to $117.50
Exceeds carrier maximums: over 108 in length, 165 in length plus girth or 150 lbs$530 to $590$535 to $595$535 to $595$530 to $590

These are peak add-ons. Each one sits on top of the carrier’s year-round Additional Handling, Large Package or Oversize charge. Amazon Shipping’s thresholds are set in its own service guide.

Key takeaway: Crossing a carrier’s size or weight thresholds can trigger charges far higher than the standard per-package demand surcharge. Packaging and cartonization are among the highest-leverage peak decisions a DTC brand can make.

For lighter parcels the question is carrier mix rather than packaging. USPS Ground Advantage in Zones 1-4 under 3 lbs adds $0.40. FedEx Ground Economy adds $2.55 from October 26, rising to $4.05 between November 23 and December 27. Same parcel, six to ten times the surcharge. At AMZ Prep’s FedEx rate, a residential Ground or Home Delivery parcel adds $0.25, or $0.40 in the peak weeks.

For FBA + DTC brands

If you also send inventory into Amazon: why your FBA deadlines fall inside the surcharge window

This section is for brands running FBA alongside a DTC channel. If you ship DTC only, skip ahead to the carrier tables.

Amazon’s inbound cutoffs for Black Friday and Cyber Monday were October 21 for minimal shipment splits and are October 28 for Amazon-optimized splits. The UPS peak window opened September 27 and FedEx’s on September 28.

That means your Q4 inbound shipments fall inside the carriers’ peak surcharge windows. Whether those charges appear on your invoice depends on the carrier, the shipping service, and whether you use Amazon’s Partner Carrier Program or your own carrier account. For most sellers this is invisible, because the surcharge lands on the inbound leg rather than on a customer order.

The exposure on inbound is dimensional. An Amazon fulfillment center is a commercial address, so residential demand surcharges don’t apply unless you ship inbound by air. Amazon accepts cartons up to 25 inches a side, but any box over 10,368 cubic inches triggers Additional Handling at UPS and FedEx, and the peak add-on with it. A 24 × 24 × 18 carton sits exactly on that line. Splits multiply how many of those cartons you send.

DecisionEffect on placement feeEffect on peak surcharges
Minimal shipment splitsHigher placement feeFewer cartons and destinations. Peak exposure only on cartons over Additional Handling limits
Amazon-optimized splitsLower or zero placement feeMore cartons to more FCs. Every oversized carton carries its own peak add-on
Consolidated LTL or truckload inboundDepends on split selectionParcel peak surcharges don’t apply to freight

Key takeaway: Decide splits and carton specs together. Keep inbound cartons at or under 10,368 cubic inches and 50 lbs, and most peak parcel surcharges never touch the inbound leg.

Oversize applies above 96 inches in length, 130 inches length plus girth, 17,280 cubic inches or 110 lbs. What are the USPS 2026 holiday prices?

USPS calls these temporary price increases rather than surcharges. They run October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027, at one flat level with no tiers, under Postal Regulatory Commission docket CP2026-10. Commercial rates shown, which is what AMZ Prep clients pay.

Cubic-priced shipments follow the same bands. Tiers 1-3 match the 0-3 lb row. Tiers 4-5 for Priority Mail and 4-9 for Ground Advantage match 4-10 lbs. Ground Advantage tier 10 matches 11-25 lbs.

Key takeaway: Ground Advantage and Priority Mail in Zones 1-4 under 3 lbs, and Parcel Select under 3 lbs, carry the smallest USPS increase at $0.40. Priority Mail to Zones 5-9 at 11-25 lbs is nearly ten times that.

What is Amazon Shipping charging for the 2026 peak?

Amazon Shipping peak surcharges run October 25, 2026 to January 16, 2027, in three tiers, on top of contracted rates.

SurchargeOct 25 – Nov 21, 2026Nov 22 – Dec 26, 2026Dec 27, 2026 – Jan 16, 2027

Additional handling$8.75$11.90$8.75
Large package$96.25$117.50$96.25
Extra heavy package$530$590$530

Key takeaway: Amazon Shipping’s handling, large package and extra heavy amounts match UPS to the cent. Its accessorials started October 25, four weeks after UPS. From here to January 16 both carriers price an oversized parcel the same, and AMZ Prep’s FedEx rate undercuts both on Additional Handling and Oversize. Amazon Shipping adds no residential surcharge.

Only the highest applicable SpeedX peak surcharge applies to a package. They don’t stack with each other, but they do stack with SpeedX’s year-round surcharges.

Key takeaway: Parcels under 24 inches on the longest side, under 45 inches combined, and under 20 lbs carry no SpeedX peak surcharge at all. The cliff at 30 lbs is the steepest on this page.

Peak playbook

How do you cut your exposure before peak?

  1. Audit your top 20 SKUs against the Additional Handling lines (48 inches, 30 inches, 10,368 cubic inches, 50 lbs), then the Large Package lines (96 inches, 130 inches). One repack below a threshold avoids a peak add-on of $8.75 to $117.50 per parcel, plus the year-round charge underneath it.
  2. Move heavy and oversized inventory before November 22. Every tiered carrier steps up for the following five weeks.
  3. Check your carrier mix by weight band and zone, not in aggregate. The right carrier for a 2 lb Zone 3 parcel is rarely the right carrier for a 22 lb Zone 8 parcel, and in peak the gap widens.
  4. Split inventory closer to demand. Zone reduction is the only lever that cuts the base rate and the surcharge at the same time.
  5. If you sell on Amazon, decide splits and carton specs together. Amazon-optimized splits lower placement fees and raise carton count. Model both.
  6. Reconcile invoices weekly through January. Surcharges are the most commonly misapplied line on a carrier invoice, and the window to dispute is short.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

No. Peak surcharges are temporary and end in mid-January. The general rate increase is permanent and takes effect separately, usually in late December or January.

Usually, yes. Demand surcharges sit on top of contracted rates, and base-rate discounts don’t reduce them unless the agreement says so. AMZ Prep’s FedEx agreement does: it halves the Ground and Home Delivery residential demand surcharge, Demand Additional Handling and Demand Oversize.

Mostly. A parcel can carry a demand surcharge and a peak Additional Handling add-on at once, and the fuel surcharge applies on top of demand surcharges. Two exceptions: UPS doesn’t charge Additional Handling when Large Package applies, and SpeedX charges only its highest peak fee.

No. They pass through at cost on a separate invoice line. Where we’ve negotiated a lower rate, like FedEx’s, you pay the lower rate.

It depends on weight band and zone. For residential ground parcels, AMZ Prep’s FedEx rate is the lowest demand surcharge on this page at $0.25 to $0.40. USPS adds $0.40 in close zones under 3 lbs. For oversized parcels, FedEx at our rate halves the peak add-on, but repacking below the threshold still saves more.

Yes. Accounts shipping more than 20,000 residential packages a week face volume-based tiers at UPS and FedEx, measured against a June 2026 baseline.

Between January 9 and January 17, 2027, depending on carrier. Veho ends first, FedEx and USPS last.

UPS and FedEx publish peak surcharges for qualifying shipments during the holiday season. Shipments booked through Amazon’s Partner Carrier Program use pre-negotiated rates, so peak surcharges may be treated differently than on shipments booked directly with a carrier. Review the shipping charges shown in Seller Central and confirm any additional fees before you finalize an inbound shipment.
